November 11-15

Last we started peer mediation groups.  We have two problem solving leaders who have been very good at helping students solve problems.  I was amazed at how well these students were able to fix problems before they escalated.  One student said, "I'm glad we talked things out...now we're friends again!"  Our peer mediators really take their job seriously.  They will come in during lunch time if any of their peers are having problems.   It was an eye opener to me....Students can solve problems on their own!  What a great life skill they are learning!!

This week:

Monday-  Veterans Day Assembly
                 Start NOVA Essays
Tuesday-  Practice math test
Wednesday-
Thursday- Math Test
Friday-      Spelling Test

7 Habits Focus:  Think Win Win
Win-win sees life as a cooperative arena, not a competitive one. Win-win is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions. Win-win means agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial and satisfying. We both get to eat the pie, and it tastes pretty darn good!

We will present Halloween Poetry to the fifth grade.
Students who have read 400 minutes will attend the Spook Alley.

Parents,
I enjoyed getting to know you at conferences.  Your help and support is so important in your child's education.  Here are some of the main goals that were set at conferences.

1.  Read 30 minutes every night.
2.  Fill out homework log every day and have a parent sign.
3.  Pass off Math Facts.
4.  Organize desk and binder.
5.  Improve comprehension strategies by using strategies on the back of homework log or use other strategies we have learned in class.

Also, I hope you had the opportunity to try out Reflex Math.

Thanks,
Mrs. Farmer

Sept. 23-27

This week:

We will begin Habit #2- Begin With The End in Mind

· Do things that have meaning and make a difference
· Be an important part of the classroom and contribute to the schools mission and   vision
· Look for ways to be a good citizen

Monday:  Math test on Place Value  & Science test on Magnetism
                Begin reading groups.

On Friday we went to Greg Tang's Math Site.  We went to games and played funny numbers.  We also played Kakooma.  These games are very good to help with number sense.  If you can play these games at home they are not only fun-but they will also increase your number sense.

Try the multiplication Kakooma
I love Kakooma!!

Beginning of the year-

it has been a pleasure getting to know your student for the past two days.  We have been learning the school wide rules, habits, and procedures.

Next week we will we start learning about The Leader in Me by Stephen Covey.  Your child will learn about the 7 habits and the qualities of a good leader.
Stephen Covey's 7 Habits
Our school had a 3 day training on this and we are so excited to implement this school wide this coming year!

We have also been learning how important reading is to be successful in life.  We have asked all fifth graders to read at least 30 minutes every night.  They will also be bringing home a homework log every night to help them be organized with their reading and school work.  Once they have finished their work and reading they are to sign their homework log.  We use to have parents sign but this year we want them to have the responsibility of making sure it is finished.

Please Call or e-mail me if you have any concerns.

Mrs. Farmer

I have had questions about what supplies to bring? The following items would be helpful but are certainly optional:

Three ring binder- (1 1/2 inch-2 inch size) I will supply pocket folders to help organize the different subjects.

*1-2 boxes of tissues- Our class usually goes through a lot of tissues throughout the year.

*highlighter
*red pen
*Pencils
*markers
*crayons
*glue stick
* I will have all of these available to use. These are items that you could buy if your child wants his/her own to use.

Thanks,

Mrs. Farmer
